March 25, the Maumee Valley … Wardells to offer first-time-ever “back greenhouse” tours
Twenty-one years ago, Tom Wardell began selling vegetables from a picnic table
in his front yard on Dutch Road. People liked them, and Tom soon branched out
to offer 100 hanging baskets, providing a coffee can by the side of the road
for “honor system” payment. Today, as the owner of “Your Garden Center for all
4 Seasons,” Tom Wardell is still branching out with new offerings every year.
In the spring, Wardells is especially known for their hanging baskets, which
include an unusual range of plants and are groomed by Tom himself and staff
members including Kathleen Johnson, who will be leading tours of Wardell’s
“back greenhouse” this Sunday, March 30th from 1pm to 4pm. There may be snow
on the fields, but long-time customers as well as first-time visitors will
experience an early spring in the greenhouse and will see how it’s done–the
seedlings and young plants which fill the greenhouse today will soon decorate
area porches, decks, and gardens.
Later in the summer, Wardells will offer homegrown sweet corn and
tomatoes, followed by a family-friendly pumpkin patch in the fall and a festive
Christmas shop for the holiday season.
Each Labor Day, Wardells is closed, but their loyal customers don’t have to miss out on fresh corn and tomatoes–Tom still offers them by the side of the road on that day- on the honor system.
Wardells, located at 7713 Dutch Road in Waterville, is an easy 15-minute drive from Toledo. Hours are from 9 to 5 on Monday through Saturday, noon to 5 on Sunday this week, but will be expanding as spring arrives. Call 419 878-4195 to check.
